Zanzibar Honeymoon: Where to Stay, Coast by Coast

The southeast coast: quiet, boutique, sunrise

The stretch from Michamvi Pingwe down through Bwejuu, Paje and Jambiani holds most of Zanzibar’s small boutique properties. This is tidal coastline: the lagoon empties at low tide into sandbars and wading pools, then refills to swimming depth. Couples either love the rhythm — walking out to sandbanks at dawn, kitesurfers on the horizon off Paje — or want a swim-anytime beach, in which case the north is honestly the better call.

The honeymoon names here: The Palms (six villas, Bwejuu, the long-established luxury pick with Condé Nast history), Zawadi (nine clifftop villas above the ocean south of us), Xanadu (villas near Jambiani), and our own Boutique Hotel Matlai in Michamvi Pingwe — six rooms in two villas, infinity pool at Villa Kidosho, floating breakfast, half board included. Baraza and Breezes, the bigger Zanzibar Collection properties, sit on the same beach as The Palms and suit couples who want boutique polish with resort facilities.

What the southeast does best for honeymooners: privacy per dollar. A six-to-nine-room property means the beach dinner is genuinely private, the pool is rarely shared, and staff know your names by day two. Rates run USD 250–600 per night at the boutique level — a third of private-island pricing.

The north coast: swimmable all day, livelier

Nungwi and Kendwa at the island’s northern tip have the one thing the east coast cannot offer: deep water at all tides. The trade-off is density — this is the most developed strip on Zanzibar, with larger resorts, beach bars and the famous Kendwa full-moon parties. Honeymooners who want to alternate pool days with nightlife, or who simply cannot relax next to a tidal flat, belong here.

The north’s honeymoon standouts are Kilindi (domed pavilion villas originally built for a royal honeymoon, each with private plunge pools) and Zuri Zanzibar (design-hotel energy, huge gardens). Both are excellent; both are also considerably busier settings than anything on the southeast coast. Sunset over water — impossible on our coast — is the north and west coasts’ daily show.

Private islands: Mnemba and the splurge tier

Mnemba Island Lodge is the fantasy: a whole private island off the northeast coast, twelve bandas, house reef, turtles nesting on the beach. It is also USD 1,500+ per person per night and books out many months ahead. If the budget genuinely stretches to it, nothing on the main island replicates it. If it half-stretches, our honest advice is different: a top boutique property plus three or four private experiences (sandbank picnic, private dhow sunset, couples spa day) recreates 80% of the feeling for 20% of the cost.

The same logic applies to overwater-style rooms elsewhere in the Indian Ocean: Zanzibar’s strength is not Maldives-style water villas, it is character, culture and coastline at boutique scale. Couples choosing between the two destinations on romance-per-dollar usually land on Zanzibar once flights are priced in.

What actually makes a Zanzibar honeymoon romantic

After years of hosting honeymooners, the pattern is clear: the memorable moments are the staged-once experiences, not the room category. The floating breakfast — a tray of fruit, pastries and eggs floating in your pool — photographs absurdly well and tastes like a holiday. A sandbank picnic at low tide, set up before you arrive and packed down after you leave, is the single most requested repeat. Private beach dinners under lanterns, a sunset cruise on a wooden ngalawa or dhow, and a couples treatment at a garden spa complete the set.

When comparing hotels, ask each one which of these they run in-house versus outsource. Small properties that own the whole chain — kitchen, boat, spa — deliver more reliably than resorts routing through external operators. Ask specifically: is the floating breakfast in YOUR villa pool or a shared one? Is the beach dinner genuinely private or a table row on the main beach? The answers separate the marketing from the experience.

Combining safari and beach — the classic Tanzania honeymoon

The strongest version of a Tanzania honeymoon runs safari first, beach second: three to five nights on the northern circuit (Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater) while energy is high, then a short flight to Zanzibar (ZNZ) and a transfer to the coast to decompress. Doing it in reverse — beach then safari — means ending the trip with 5 a.m. game drives and a long journey home.

Timing matters: the June-to-October dry season is peak for both safari and beach, and the January–February window pairs calving season in the southern Serengeti with hot, dry beach weather. Book the safari legs first (lodges are the scarce resource), then match the beach nights. From ZNZ airport, the southeast coast is about 75–90 minutes by road; any good hotel arranges the transfer.

Who we are right for: couples who want the quiet end of the island, an infinity pool shared by at most two suites (Villa Kidosho), floating breakfast, half board at our beachfront restaurant, and the tides as the daily schedule. Who we are wrong for: couples who want to swim in the ocean at any hour (go north), want nightlife within walking distance (Nungwi or Paje), or want the private-island fantasy and can fund it (Mnemba).

That is the same honest sorting we do on WhatsApp every week when couples ask us whether to book. The east coast rewards the couples it fits — and so does every other coast on this list, for its own kind of couple.
